Description
Reuben Harrison Hunt (1862-1937), referred to at the time of his death as "the outstanding architect of the South" designed public buildings in virtually every southern state, though his efforts were focused primarily on his home of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Between 1895 and 1935, there was no public building erected in Chattanooga in which Hunt was not involved. This book by Hunt scholar Gavin Townsend examines the architect's work in Chattanooga, from his first major commission (the First Baptist Church, 1886) to his final significant local work, the Joel W. Solomon Federal Building (1933). Focused primarily on churches, government buildings, and skyscrapers, Hunt's work exhibits the changes to American architecture that took place in the decades surrounding the turn of the twentieth century.
