Description
Shows the underground workings of at least six of the most famous Leadville mines. The Wolftone was the site of an underground banquet for 250 people in 1911 to celebrate a new era in zinc mining. The Robert Emmet (like the Coronado) was heavily guarded and figures in the disastrous strike of 1896. The Mikado achieved somber fame in the 1880s as being haunted. Because a prospector was said to have complained that he ripped his pants every time he slid down the slope, the "Ragged Ass Mine" got its name, but only the initials R.A.M. ever appeared in print. Other maps shown are the Greenback, the Agassiz, the Mahala, and the Gonabrod, sometimes spelled Gone-Abroad.
