Description
Transcription of recorded interviews of Laura Evans conducted by Frank Mazzula at various intervals from March 1948 to November 1952. "Laura Evans was born in Alabama and arrived in Denver, probably in 1893, where she worked as a sporting lady until 1895. During that winter she relocated to Leadville and worked on West Fifth Street as a high class woman of the night. Because of her beauty and winning personality, she often entertained the wealthy mine owners. She was an impulsive and flamboyant lady looking for a good time, and the Leadville newspapers often carried stories of her free spirited escapades. Following the Leadville strike, Laura moved to Salida and established a bordello that did a brisk business until it closed in 1950. Her oral history is facinating, filled with the flavor of the times, rich in history, and lacking the sordid details of her chosen profession."---R. C. Barth
